While Job Searching

  • When you are completing your job search, contact the people whom you already know. See if they know anybody searching for someone with your skills and if they’re willing to introduce you to them. Often job seekers skip this step; however, that’s not a good idea. A great recommendation can get your foot in the door.
  • Ask for letters of recommendations from your professors and any previous employers or internship coordinators.
  • Make sure that your resume is completely up-to-date before you start your job search. Add all relevant awards and extracurricular or volunteer opportunities you may have had.
  • Keep looking for ways to develop your skills. Understand that technology is always changing; therefore, companies are continuously changing their business strategies. You need to know all the relevant skills to be viable in your field. If you need to, take a few classes or sign up for seminars. The more you know, the more marketable you will be to your current employer or to your future employer.
  • Don’t limit yourself to searching for just one type of job. Many jobs with different titles require similar skills; skills that you might have.
  • Keep yourself in the right frame of mind. Keep your mind on getting a job, and don’t accept failure. Never skate along with simply unemployment wages, or you’ll easily become complacent with your current life. Rather, try setting goals for the number of applications you do.

Before the interview

  • Prepare several questions to ask your interviewer. You will almost always be asked if there are any questions. Ask them what working at that company is like, what kind of work that it is and anything else that may be on your mind.
  • Always dress your best for the interview. Even if it’s a casual work dress environment, the interviewer will still be impressed that you went through the process to look your best.
